Thia is my Favorite barbq ...Cooked like you cook at home..the sauce is Awesome!! Longtime customer over 20 yrs! Order ahead..tip
I have been going her for years, since before I was able to even drive I've been eating their food and I love it I love their fries with barbecue sauce on it ummm.
Rib Tips are the truth. Bones are ok but the tips were better. Fried Shrimp ok but not great. Potato salad is out freaking standing. The lunch specials at $7 is one of the best deals in town. The portions are generous. I will return, which I think is the BEST thing you can say about a restaurant.

First outing here, and overall? Pretty darned good, with an emphasis on getting the most important things right: the BBQ I had was very good...it just would have been nice had it been hotter, temperature-wise. Other than that? That was some *good* meat.
I decided tonight would be the night that I'd branch out and try Nunn's BBQ for the first time, since my former go-to place for BBQ pork rib tips, Ron's Roadside BBQ in Ann Arbor, is no longer in business, according to Ron. This makes me sad, but it did force me to get out of my comfort zone and try someone else's. Nunn's are quite good, too: pretty tender, with a nice, tangy sauce, and very nice flavor. Again, I wish the tips would have been hotter, but the microwave sufficed in that way, too...at a slight sacrifice of the tenderness, but not enough to be unhappy about.
Service was functional. They were busy at work in there, and they got me in and out in pretty quick fashion. I wouldn't call it congenial, but it wasn't anywhere near rude or anything of the kind. More "busy", and since the food came relatively quickly, a lack of smiling and such can be overlooked. One thing is for sure: you are *not* going to be eating your food there...you're taking your food to go. Bye-bye, friend.
As for the sides, I inquired as to whether their potato salad and coleslaw were made in house. I was told that the coleslaw was, but that the potato salad wasn't. I ordered one of each as my two sides with the dinner. One was good, the other was wretched. Guess which is which.
Believe it or not, the store-bought potato salad was just fine, and eaten in its entirety. It's certainly nothing that you haven't eaten before at a larger picnic-type gathering, but it's fine: sweeter than you might expect, but a very appropriate accompaniment to the BBQ rib tips. No complaints there.
That coleslaw, though? IT. WAS. AWFUL. Here's a word I honestly don't use very often: "unredemptive". I'll use it in a sentence: "The made-in-house coleslaw that I had today from Nunn's BBQ in Detroit was completely unredemptive." It was everything you don't want in coleslaw: a disgusting, gloppy, sticky mess that had awful flavor and got tossed wholesale into the garbage can, never to be seen or heard from again, hopefully. I'm not even being hyperbolic, either...it's just stinking horrible, and should be avoided at all costs. Don't say you weren't warned.
A couple of slices of wheat bread were also included in a separate baggie and weren't eaten by me...it's just not my thing, but it is a BBQ tradition.
So, aside from that beyond-the-pale coleslaw, you've got a pretty good experience all around. Perhaps a bit on the expensive side, but not expensive enough to wince at or anything. Coleslaw can be avoided easily in future orders, and the BBQ is trustworthy for me.
Happy I tried it, and it's very possible I'll be back, but I'm also going to be trying other places looking for another place to be my go-to for rib tips...but Nunn's put a pretty good foot forward. Nothing to be ashamed of...except for that cursed coleslaw. That stuff can just be *gone*, and the world's a better place for it.
I can see why they've been around for a while.
Wanted to take my friends who were in from Oslo, Norway to Detroit to get a taste of real soul food so I found this place on yelp and they did not disappoint! The ribs were off the bone delicious, the baked beans were like my mom used to make and the greens and candied yams were excellent too. The lady at the window made sure my order was put in the way so I would get the most bang for my buck too, which was greatly appreciated.
The ribs are tender, juicy and very flavorful. I ordered a large end dinner with mac n cheese, greens and a perch dinner with double mac n cheese. The sides were tasty too. The rib dinner was a nice portion, however, the perch dinner only had 3 small pieces. It looked more like a lunch special than a dinner. It was delicious but the pieces of fish should have been bigger or the quantity increased. This is a carry-out only restaurant so be sure to place your order in advance or be prepared to wait. Totally worth the wait!!!!!!
Small take out in NE Detroit, small parking lot and street parking. Counter guy seemed indifferent but capable. Received food faster than the given 20 minute time. We ordered the slab with 2 large sides. The rib slab was pretty good for a restaurant. Most are boiled however this texture did seem grilled & smoked. The sauce is just Ok. My husband swears it's Open Pit because of the red color it had. I hate Open Pit so maybe they add some spices to it. I enjoyed the greens and ate most of them. I tasted the yams and Mac and cheese and they were pretty good as well. The family sides were adequate for the three of us. Counter guy gave muffins to another person but not us, dinner comes with sliced wheat bread.?!?!?
I would go again if I wanted ribs.
The Ribs are my fav menu item from this spot. Nice big slab that is juicy and a nice deep bbq sauce.
Their shrimp is battered perfectly home made style but it a little pricy but totally worth it when fresh.
The sides are meh but the best were the Mac n chess n corn bread was not bad either.
Rib tips came in a huge portion and is a steal but I'm not the biggest fan of having tiny bones I need to look out for when I eat. So to me the slab ribs were way better.
Overall a decent spot, nothing compared to bbq in the south but for MI this place is pretty good would give 3.5 to 4 stars and 5 stars for service the ladies there were the sweetest.
I have been to so many places that claim they have the best ribs. Aside from one other place Nunn's BBQ ribs are just as good as that place and being closer to my house I will definitely go back to them.
This was my first time trying out this place which is literally on the other side of town, but I must say it's by far the best trip I've taken in a while.. The ribs are ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!.. Tender and juicy with a bbq sauce that will make you slap yo momma and daddy!!!.. I will definitely make that trip again!
Best BBQ sauce hands down. I've been looking for a place that make ribs like my grandparents did back in the day and I found them here. Not in the best area but the ribs are worth it!
Hands down these are the best ribs and rib tips in Detroit! I've been to a few other places and no other BBQ restaurant sauce can match Nunns! The turkey chops are AMAZING! And the shrimp are giant and tasty.. I literally can go on and on about how good the food is... If ur in Detroit stop in and see for yourself! FYI there's a lady that cooks there that's a lil on the cranky side but she serves quality all the time!
Nunn's BBQ II (not sure where the original location is, or if it even still exists), on Conant just a bit north of Hamtramck, is one of Detroit's legendary old school BBQ spots! Like any great local hole in the wall, it's an extremely bare bones operation - a little brick rectangle with thick bulletproof glass separating you and the cash register, no seating to speak of, and a big photo of Grandpa Nunn serving as the only decoration.
One of the best things about Nunn's is how dang cheap it is - in this modern era of $15-20 dollar half racks of ribs, you can get a half rack + sides for about twelve bucks, and their lunch specials will only set you back six! My personal favorite? The six-dollar pig's feet dinner with spicy sauce - if you've ever found yourself wondering why on earth anyone would want to eat a pig's foot, get thee down to Nunn's and find out for yourself!
Nunn's might also get my award for best homemade BBQ sauce in the area (although I did just get to try LaMar's sauce at this year's Ribs & R&B Festival, and that's a close contender). You can buy it by the bottle, and I've been using it for my own grillin' all summer. When I bought my first bottle, the young guy behind the counter gave me a big smile and said: "I hope you enjoy my grandpa's sauce!" Doesn't that just tell you everything you need to know??
My go to place for over 20 years. Since moving to Atlanta I always stop at Nunn's when in town to get ribs to take back to and put in my freezer. Love the sauce, the ribs and rib tips are always on point, lots of meat on the rib tips.
I really enjoyed the BBQ here. I ordered the half of slab dinner with Mac and cheese and greens.. AMAZING! The ribs were so tender and flavorful. Their BBQ sauce is the best I've had in the city since moving from Saginaw hands down! I'm definitely coming back to try the rib tips.
This place has the best ribs I've ever had.. stop by and see for yourself. Call ahead and ask for a fresh slab. Their chicken wings are off the hook and have their own flavor. I'm here at least once or twice a week
Macoroni/cheese & yams were terrible.
But ribs and shrimp where the best I've had in a while
Definitely a good place to go for ribs and shrimp
Ordered ribs and grilled whole chicken. Ribs were great! Chicken was good. Mac and cheese was less than, but everyone can't make good mac and cheese, unfortunately. I will definitely return.
Great ribs but the banter between the old lady in the kitchen and the kids at the cash register was irritating after a few minutes. Not sure if that's part of the charm or not. Definitely great ribs though!!
Omg!! Literally the best Bbq I've had in a life gm time! The sauce is authentic. Taste homemade. I ordered the ribs and they were very tender. The Mac and cheese is ok but those baked beans are spectacular! I definitely will be back for more!
I been going to Nunns for years!! Love all their food. Never had a problem with their food or customer Service. Good food...now if they only had delivery......im dreaming...
Nunn's is the best BBQ in the area. This place is a hidden gem. They get really busy in the evening and especially on Friday nights! I always call my order in as it's a lot easier than waiting but even when I have to it is worth the wait!
Love nun's barbeque love it, it's really good I'm there often when i don't want to cook and have a taste for barberque nun's is the place
Best Mac and cheese greens yams rib tips all DAT
Great food hands done at a great price
By far the best BBQ in Detroit. The ribs literally falls off the bones. The special BBQ sauce is what they're famous for. It's like a flavor you can't find anywhere else in the city. Those authentic southern style rib tips was bomb as hell! I recommend this restaurant to all my friends and family.. Been coming here for over 30 years!
How come I haven't reviewed this place yet???
OMG best soul food / barbecue in the area.
Get the combination with ribs pulled pork, Mac and cheese, baked beans. Side of greens!!!
10/10 every time. It's a local place, all star food, very Detroit original, family owned and operated !
Great food, reasonably priced, and good service. I would recommend them to anyone.

First time going there I went in and ordered i waited 20mins LEFT came back a half hour later and had to wait 15mins. It was WORTH the wait the food taste fresh made to order and was so delicious.! I had the rib tip dinner with mac and cheese and a side of greens. Mac and cheese needs improvement but over all the food was great.
Second time (today 3-22-14)
I never had catfish in my life. I got the dinner with the same sides as before. The catfish was the best fried fish I have ever tasted.! I ordered ahead this time so when i went in i only waited 5mins. Its really worth the price and wait GREAT JOB NUNN'S.!!!
This place is certainly the crème de la crème of BBQ in Detroit! The rib tips are absolutely wonderful! They are tender, juicy and have the perfect amount of spice and sweetness added. But if you are looking for some fried seafood, then you MUST try their golden fried jumbo shrimp....yummmm.....!!! They are well seasoned, nice and crunchy on the outside and crisp on the inside. Their shrimp are truly a seafood lover's dream and we ain't talkin that Red Lobster crap! The only thing that I do not like is the mac and cheese. It tastes like it came from out of a can. Avoid the sides and save your money for the stuff that makes this place supreme, the meat!
Mr Nunn, I forgive you for taking so long with my order, because your rib tips are that good. The crinkle cut fries were delightful. I could have done without the slice of bread. I will be back.
What do you do when you don't feel like firing up the grill and really want a slab of ribs: find a local joint that will do the work for you, yet let's you look like the hero! I called in an order to Nunn's and the person who answered was very friendly and explained what they had to order since I was a newbie. She took my order and said it would be ready in 10 minutes. YES 10 minutes for food to feed a small army! They slow cooked all morning since it was holiday time.
Nunn's is a small spot that you would never think of since it's right on Conant. However anybody that lives on the eastside knows about Nunn's. The order was ready and roughly $24 for a slab dinner with 2 sides. The meat fell off the bone when we dug it. A really good sign for BBQ. The mac & cheese was really creamy and the greens were seasoned just right. I'm not a fan of anything besides collards, but they were good none the less.
No complaints on the food. I would suggest trying the Kinta cake. I was puzzled when she mentioned it too. It's a has multicolor pound cake (red, purple, yellow) that has a sweet taste. Really moist and unique. That was definitely a "I'm not sharing" slice of cake.
After passing Conant St several times and driving to Grosse Pointe in error, this restaurant was definitely worth the waste of time and gas getting lost.
The ribs were very tender and were generously coated in a flavorful sauce. The crinkle cut fries, without the sauce were hot and crispy. The baked beans were good although the beans were missing bacon. I found their pricing to be standard and was worth more. Finding a good BBQ Restaurant in Detroit is a small task. I would definitely recommend this place.
I have heard about Nunn's from a few friends and that it has been here forever. I was always a little reluctant to go here at first as it is in a tough part of town on the eastside of Detroit, but I was working just around the corner on my first visit and decided to give Nunn's a try. Now, I have been to Nunn's quite a few times and can swear by their taste.
Pulling up to Nunn's the first time, I had to wonder if I was at the right place. From the outside, it looks like a barber shop or bait store with it's white exterior and red lettering, but I have heard that there are ribs here that are some of the best. And they are not kidding. Their ribs and rib tips are out of this world. I love how they dip their ribs in their special sauce. They are so tender and so good.
Nunn's is just a carry out and their is no dining in here, but I do believe Nunn's is considerably better than that place on Michigan Avenue near old Tiger's Stadium where the suburbanites feel safe traveling one block off the freeway. Nunn's is in a class of its own and for me, it is either Milt's BBQ, Nunn's BBQ or even Bert's Marketplace in the summer months.
Nunn's is open seven days a week and one of Detroit's very best !
